Not many people know that when you visit Bogota it’s very easy to leave for the day and go explore the beautiful countryside. There are many options for overnight trips as well. Rock climbing, rafting, repelling, hiking, mountain biking… you name it, they have it! There are always reasonably priced hotel and campground options nearby the attractions. A great way to go is to hire a company to take you there because they usually provide everything for you (transport, lodging, food) and their guides are generally professional and fun. We have some great suggestions below!

Lagos de Menegua

Located in a beautiful region called "Los Llanos", this resort has a lot to offer. You can decide to go horseback riding, or borrow one of their kayak and paddle around. It's also a great idea to bring a mountain bike if you want to exercise or you can just simply lay by the great pool and get some sun. We definitely recommend to go and walk around as they have a great ecological trek where you can see wild animals like toucans and monkeys. A must! Note that the resort is about 5 hours from Bogota, so you will need more than 2 days to really appreciate your stay.

Chicaque

Beautiful national park at about 45 minutes from Bogota.  You can hike down to an amazing hotel and spend the night there if you want, or you have plenty of time to hike back up and come back to Bogota by the end of the day. Since it’s up high in the mountains, fog will often block the amazing view. You can also camp on the camp site near the hotel. A much cheaper option far from the city noise.

Tobia

About two hours from Bogota in hot country you can find a variety of extreme water sports. A company (pre-arranged or solicited via the hotel/campground personnel) can arrange two to three activities in a day. I would personally suggest two, since the traveling and the trekking to get there can be tiresome. Again, you can pick from rappelling, rafting, canopy (zip line)… The guides will also stop on the way to give some landscape and cultural information. Here's the contact info of a few companies we have used that are very professional:

Ecoparque Macadamia

Situated just a few hours from Bogota (near La Mesa), This warm-weather park offers some very interesting extreme adventure packages. The first one costs 20 000 pesos per person and lasts 1 and 1/2 hours. There is also a 5 hour plan that costs around 60 000 pesos. There is professional guide with you at all times that will explain the steps as the adventure goes by. You must try the patacones (a plantain smashed and fried served with a range of different toppings) served at the restaurant.

Guatavita

Located 75 km from Bogota, the Laguna de Guatavita is a sacred lake and a ritual center of Muisca Indians. The quiet and beautiful lake is where the legend "El Dorado" originated. The legend says that a giant meteor fell about 2000 years ago and left a huge circular hole shaped like a volcano crater. The Indians interpreted the phenomenon as the arrival of a golden god who lived thereafter at the bottom of the lake. The lake became an object of worship, where gold, emeralds and food were offered for protection. When the Spaniards saw the Indians throwing gold into the lake, they believed a fortune was at the bottom of it, so several attempts were made to recuperate the treasure. After 400 years of digging, draining, pumping, and diving, the lagoon was finally left in peace. Some pieces of gold were found and the most famous is the "Balsa Muisca" found in 1856 and is at the gold museum in Bogota.
It costs 12 000 pesos for foreigners to get in the site and that includes a guide (English, French or Spanish) who brings you there on the top where you can see the lake and a magnificent view. The ascension may take about 45 minutes and can be a little steep at time. Know that the guide will leave you on the top of the mountain and you will have to go back to the parking lot from the other side on the road. This could take up to 1 hour. It's a beautiful walk, but make sure you have sunscreen and water with you. You can also catch a bus passing by for 1000 pesos that will drop you off at the parking lot.
